This project’s completion resulted in the creation of the first public James Turrell Skyspace experience In New York city. This involved the vertical extension of the building as well as the installation of an operable roof structure provided by UNI-Systems. UNI-System has provided the NFL with retractable roofs for their stadiums. This roof was fabricated in-house and engineered specifically for this project’s application. Underneath the roof, an exterior-rated, indoor space can be found. This space features plaster finishes and custom peak millwork benches accompanied by 265 colored-graze lighting systems that are used for the James Terrell Sky Space lighting shows.
Independent access was created because the building is a privately owned and occupied school. Construction access was separated to provide independent access to the building so as not to disturb staff, students, and building operations. The creation of Taurino’s independent access point required seven stories of scaffolding with overhead protection around the perimeter of the building as well as an area Hostway.
